The devastating US-Israel war against Iran has entered its fifth day today with no signs of ceasefire. As explosions continue to rock Tehran and other Iranian cities, Iran is now scrambling to select a new supreme leader after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial US-Israeli strikes last week.
Israel Launches 10th Wave of Attacks
Israel's air force says it dropped more than 1,200 munitions across 24 of Iran's 31 provinces over the past day in its joint attack with the US. The Israeli military confirmed a broad wave of strikes targeted internal security command centers in Tehran, as well as missile launchers and other military systems across the country.
Iran Selecting New Supreme Leader
With Ayatollah Khamenei dead, Iran's Assembly of Experts has begun the urgent process of selecting a new supreme leader. Senior Iranian officials have been meeting virtually to select a replacement. Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is among the top contenders being considered as successor. However, Israel has warned that any new supreme leader will be an immediate target for elimination.
Death Toll Crosses 1,045
Multiple locations across Iran are being bombarded, and Tehran is carrying out retaliatory attacks across the region. Explosions were heard in different parts of the Iranian capital, and Iranian state television showed the rubble of a building in central Tehran. The holy city of Qom and several other cities were also targeted.
Iran Hits Back — US Bases Under Attack
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has launched massive retaliatory attacks across the entire region. Iranian missiles have targeted the headquarters of the US Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain's Juffair area multiple times. Bahrain's Ministry of Interior confirmed that the country's international airport was targeted with a drone.
US Soldiers Killed
Four US soldiers were killed in the Iran war on Sunday and were identified by the Pentagon. Their unit kept troops supplied with food and equipment. President Trump acknowledged the losses and warned that more casualties are likely before the conflict ends.
US Embassies Closed Across Middle East
The US has closed embassies in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Lebanon, after several were hit with Iranian strikes. A CIA station in Saudi Arabia, and a US military base in Qatar — the largest in the Middle East — were also hit.
Global Stock Markets Crash
The ongoing war has triggered panic in global financial markets. South Korea's stock market triggered a circuit breaker after massive losses. Japan's Nikkei fell sharply while Taiwan stocks dropped significantly. Oil and natural gas prices continue to surge worldwide as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
India on High Alert
The Indian government is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East. India imports over 85% of its oil needs through the Persian Gulf region. The government has asked all Indian nationals in Gulf countries to register with the nearest Indian Embassy and follow safety guidelines strictly. Higher oil and gas prices are expected to impact petrol and diesel prices in India in the coming days.
What Happens Next?
President Trump has said the war could last four to five weeks. Secretary of State Rubio warned that the hardest strikes on Iran are yet to come. The United Nations Security Council continues emergency sessions but no agreement has been reached. The world watches anxiously as this conflict reshapes the entire Middle East.
