In a massive disruption that has left thousands of passengers stranded across India, budget airline IndiGo has cancelled hundreds of flights over the past few days. The flight cancellations have caused chaos at major airports across the country, with passengers struggling to rebook their travel plans.
How Many Flights Cancelled?
The scale of cancellations has been massive. IndiGo suspended 166 flights on March 1, followed by 162 flights on March 2, and 156 flights on March 3. On March 4 today, 57 flights have already been impacted and the number is expected to rise further as the day progresses. In total, over 500 flights have been cancelled or disrupted in just four days.
Why Are Flights Being Cancelled?
The airline has cited operational reasons for the cancellations. Aviation experts believe the disruptions may be linked to a combination of crew shortages, technical issues with aircraft, and increased demand during the Holi festival season. IndiGo has not yet issued a detailed official statement explaining the full reasons behind the unprecedented scale of cancellations.
Passengers Stranded at Airports
Thousands of passengers have been left stranded at airports across India including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata. Many passengers took to social media to express their frustration, sharing images and videos of overcrowded airport terminals and long queues at IndiGo counters.
What Should Affected Passengers Do?
If your IndiGo flight has been cancelled, follow these steps. First, check your email and SMS for cancellation notification from IndiGo. Second, visit IndiGo's official website or app to rebook your flight at no extra charge. Third, you are entitled to a full refund if you choose not to rebook — claim it through the IndiGo app or website. Fourth, contact IndiGo customer care at 0124-6173838 for immediate assistance. Fifth, if stranded at the airport, approach the IndiGo counter for meal vouchers and hotel accommodation if applicable.
DGCA Takes Note
India's aviation regulator DGCA has taken note of the large-scale cancellations and has asked IndiGo to submit a detailed explanation. The regulator has warned that action will be taken if passengers are not properly compensated and accommodated as per civil aviation rules.
Gold Prices Today
In other news, gold prices have seen a slight dip today. The price of 22-carat gold decreased marginally, with ten grams selling at Rs 1,53,640. Silver prices also remained stable. Experts say gold prices remain elevated due to global uncertainty caused by the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.
