Kejriwal Acquitted in Delhi Liquor Policy Case

In a major legal development, a Delhi court on Friday discharged Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and 21 other accused in the Delhi Excise Policy case. The Rouse Avenue Court refused to take cognisance of the CBI chargesheet filed against them, delivering a massive relief to the Aam Aadmi Party.
What Happened in Court?
The Rouse Avenue Court examined the CBI chargesheet carefully and found insufficient grounds to frame charges against the accused. The court discharged all 23 accused including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
After the verdict, Kejriwal addressed the media outside the court. Visibly emotional, he said that truth has finally prevailed. He stated that the Delhi Excise Policy case was the biggest political conspiracy hatched against AAP by the central government. He added that five senior AAP leaders were sent to jail and even a sitting Chief Minister was arrested, but today the court has declared everyone innocent.
AAP Reaction
AAP leader Gopal Rai welcomed the court's decision and said that this historic verdict proves that justice still prevails in the country. He called the case a politically motivated attempt to destroy the AAP party.
What Was the Delhi Excise Policy Case?
The Delhi Excise Policy case dates back to 2022 when the CBI and ED began investigating alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. The agencies alleged that the policy was designed to benefit certain liquor traders in exchange for kickbacks. Several AAP leaders including Kejriwal and Sisodia were arrested in connection with the case.
Political Impact
This verdict is being seen as a major political victory for AAP ahead of upcoming elections. The party has consistently maintained that the case was fabricated to weaken the opposition. Today's court decision gives AAP a strong platform to counter the central government's narrative.
What's Next?
While the CBI may challenge this order in a higher court, today's discharge gives all 23 accused immediate relief. Legal experts say the court's refusal to take cognisance is a significant setback for the CBI's case.
